As I walked into Wavy for my first day, I could not contain my excitement. I finally received the internship I have dreamed of since I was 14 years old. Being a news intern, I was able to attend the pitch meeting that morning. Sitting there I was surrounded by anchors and reporters I have looked up too since I was little. I remember watching Don Roberts and Katie Collett in my living room everyday. Next thing I know, I am having a one on one conversation with both of them and I am starstruck.
The second day, I started working with a producer, helping her write scripts and pitch story ideas. It was so interesting to learn the process of building a show and how much hard work a producer actually has to do. It’s tough and early hours of constant updating, being factual, and having stories that are attention grabbing to the audience. After the script is finished, we went into the studio and control room. It’s the moment I have been waiting for; seeing how the news is broadcasted. Katie Collett and Don Roberts sit down at the anchor desk and the countdown begins. The midday news starts and the butterflies fill my stomach. I’m still in shock. There are so many televisions showcasing every camera angle that it’s a bit overwhelming, but so exciting. I am so fascinated with every aspect of the show that it was the fastest hour of my life. From how calm it is in the studio to the high intensity in the control room; I don’t want this hour to end.
I am already so thankful this opportunities…it’s hard for me to put into words. With Don Roberts taking time out of his day to read a news script with me to Katie Collett giving me life advice…that had this experience unforgettable.
Before I started this internship, I knew being an anchor or reporter was the job for me. Not only has the internship reassured me of that, it has also proven to me that any job in the news/media field is what I am suppose to be doing. I finally found my niche and wow, it is so relieving.
Working for the number one station in the ENTIRE Hampton Roads is hard, exciting, but most importantly incredibly rewarding. I cannot wait to see what’s in store for the rest of my summer.
All I can say is, thank you Wavy.
