Blog: Cool Down Is In Sight

Is it Summer in here or is just me? Despite summer being over 20 days away, it feels like we are in late June or early July. High temps yesterday hit the mid-upper 90s. The average high temps for this time of year is 79 degrees. Norfolk officially hit 96 even though one of the sensors read 97. This was just shy of the record. Elizabeth City hit 100. I believe this broke the old record of 99.

Highs Yesterday

We’ll have the same types of temps today. Highs will be in the mid-upper 90s with the heat index in the upper 90s to near 100. We have high pressure to the south, and a stationary front off to the north.

Regional Weather Map

Winds will be out of the west/southwest with lots of sunshine. The breeze will be decent today, and the humidity isn’t terrible. Dew points have actually dropped to the low-mid 60s. So the heat index will be close to the high temps this afternoon (upper 90s to near 100). There may be some stray showers later in the day, but they will be very limited.

Tomorrow we’ll have the cold front move in from the west. High temps will drop to the mid 80s. It will be a lot better out there. Skies will be partly cloudy. There will be a few scattered rain showers and storms by the afternoon. (A 30% chance). The chance goes up by the evening.

Future Trak (Friday Evening)

There will be some scattered showers and storms with possibly some heavy downpours and gusty winds at that time. This could move in by the evening commute. We’ll be partly cloudy on Saturday. We’ll have a few more rain showers as the front stalls out to our south. High temps will be in the mid 80s. A second cold front will move through on Sunday. We’ll have a few more scattered showers and storms with highs in the 80s. The models keep going back and forth about the timing and placement of any rain over the weekend. Neither day looks like a washout, but we really do need that rain. We are 1″ below the average rainfall for the month. We are down 2.42″ below the average since March 1st. So hopefully, we’ll get some rain soon. Lawns are looking a little rough. At least the ones that haven’t been watered.
