Blog: Dry for travel today. Rain on Thanksgiving

The weather should be pretty good today for travel in the region, and it should even be good for most of the country for national travel.

Regional Travel Forecast

Other than a few sprinkles to the west, the region should be dry. High temps will be in the upper 50s with a few 60s south and west. There is definitely some colder air in the Midwest that will eventually make its way down here.

Forecast Temps Today

As I mentioned national travel should be fine today for most of the country.

National Travel Today

There will be a line of mixed precip between Colorado and Indiana. This should only pose a few problems for travelers though. This is north of a stationary front and an area of low pressure.

Regional Weather Map

Today we have a small area of high pressure controlling the weather. However, tomorrow that area of low pressure will quickly jet east. This will create a big area of rain that will also move east.

Travel Forecast Tomorrow Morning

This will impact a lot of drivers and flyers over the eastern U.S.

GFS Model Thursday

There will be some wintry weather over parts of New England and the Northeast into the afternoon and evening.

Locally that means that we are going to have some scattered rain showers at times, but it doesn’t look like a washout anymore. There will be increasing showers during the morning between 5 and 9am.

Future Trak Thursday Morning

The area of low pressure will be moving into the region, and a warm front will lift to the north. At the same time a cold front will be approaching from the west. There will be ample moisture with this system, but the deepest moisture will probably be more of a thin zone. This means that we could get a few heavy showers, and there may even be a few thunderstorms.

Future Trak Thursday Afternoon

If the front gets a little more to the north and the sun pops out a bit, then that could allow temps to reach near 70 degrees briefly. That could become fuel for some thunderstorms during the afternoon. For now I have highs in the upper 60s.

Forecast Temps Tomorrow

The low and the cold front should swing through late tomorrow. The good news is that the models are agreeing on this trend. That means that we could have some clearing between the late afternoon and early evening.

Future Trak Thursday Evening

There is still some time for the forecast to change. So check back for updates to the timing of the precip for Thursday. Winds will be out of the southwest tomorrow, but the winds will turn out of the northwest late. There will be some gusts to 20mph.

After that we’ll dry out Friday into the weekend. It will become much colder though. Highs will be in the low 50s Friday, and it will be breezy. However, it will stay breezy Saturday and Sunday with highs only in the upper 40s.

Temperature Trend

Low temps will drop to the upper 20s to low 30s. It will be time to get out the Winter Coats if you haven’t already.

Safe travels and happy holidays to everyone.
