Blog: Last day of heavy rain & storms…for a while.

Yesterday a lot of the metro caught a break from the rain, but there were still some heavy showers just north and south of Hampton Roads.

Rain Yesterday

I thought there would be less coverage than Tuesday, but the models still had scattered thunderstorms during the afternoon. I should have sided more with my gut. Anyway, it was still pretty hot and humid with high temps around 90 degrees.

Today will be cooler for sure. There’s no cold front yet, but the high amount of clouds and rain will keep our high temps down in the low 80s this afternoon. It may only be in the upper 70s in a few spots. We’ll see. The reasons for the extra cloud cover and high rain coverage are from a stationary front and a large pool of deep/rich moisture.

Regional Weather Map

High pressure is offshore, and there is a cold front slowly approaching from the northwest. So take the umbrella today. You’ll need it. We’ll have on and off rain showers with scattered thunderstorms. This will be from the mid-morning through the early afternoon.

Future Trak This Afternoon

Future Trak and a couple other models taper off the rain by the evening hours. Before it wraps up we could see another half inch up to 2 inches of rainfall. Isolated spots could see 2-3 inches.

Rainfall Forecast

The ground is very saturated. So Isolated flooding will be possible.

There could also be a couple of strong storms. Strong gusty winds will be possible if any downbursts occur.

By tonight the rain should let up. The cold front will reach the area tomorrow morning. So we’ll start off with lots of clouds and a few spotty showers. The front and the showers will sink down to North Carolina by the midday and early afternoon.

Future Trak Friday Afternoon

As we go through Friday the drier air will filter southward.

Muggy Meter

We should have some pretty nice weather developing over southeast Virginia, but a few showers could linger over North Carolina. With high temps in the low 80s it should feel pretty good by the afternoon.

Temperature Trend

We’ll keep drying out late Friday into the weekend. Other than some isolated showers over the Outer Banks I think we’ll have some great weather in the region. High temps will be in the low 80s both days. We’ll have a light northeast breeze. It will be so nice to be able to get out and enjoy the weather for a while. It feels like we’ve had either storms or dangerous heat for about a month and a half straight. The quiet weather should continue into early next week. The heat and humidity will rise a bit more by next Tuesday and Wednesday.
