Blog: Weak low slowly moves out to sea.

Yesterday we had a lot of rain over the region. At first it was scattered rain showers, but it turned into a large area of light-moderate rain by the evening. There was also some heavy rain overnight.

Heavy Rain Last Night

This moved out by the early this morning, but there was some drizzle lingering along with low clouds.

We picked up a much-needed 1 to 1.75″ of rainfall. A few locations had 2″ or more.

Rainfall Reports

My weather watcher, Scott in Yorktown, had about 1.3″ of rain. There were a few reports of 2″ from viewers in Virginia Beach.

At first the precip was from overunning moisture. However, since yesterday a weak area of low pressure has formed and moved into our region.

Regional Weather Map

Today that low will very slowly move out to sea. We’ll have lots of clouds. The drizzle should decrease. Then we’ll only have some isolated showers from the mid morning through the early afternoon. After that a few showers with some isolated thunderstorms will form in the later afternoon. They will move through during the evening.

Future Trak Late Afternoon

We’ll have a northwest wind running at 10-15mph with a few gusts to 20mph.

Tomorrow, the low will slowly push out to sea.

Offshore Low Tomorrow

However, there will be some wrap-around moisture. So we’ll probably hold on to some coastal clouds. There may be a couple of stray showers closer to the coast as well, but we’ll probably have a good amount of sunshine inland. High temps will be in the 70s both today and tomorrow.

We should have some nice weather on Friday. We’ll be partly cloudy with high temps in the mid 70s. Then there’s the weekend….

It’s a bit tricky because the timing has been changing, but we definitely expecting some rain. As of this morning it looks like we’ll have quiet weather Saturday morning. However, rain looks to move in during the afternoon. This is the GFS model’s forecast:

GFS Model Saturday Afternoon

Keep in mind that the European model is much earlier for the rain. So it is pretty much widespread by the mid afternoon.

European Model Saturday Afternoon

Both models then have a good amount of rain Saturday night, and they both have scattered to occasional rain showers on Sunday.

GFS Model Sunday

The big problem is that there are a lot of events this weekend. Weekend Events. So check back for updates as this will be from an area of low pressure moving through, and the timing of that feature may change a bit. Either way high temps will be in the 70s.

One last thing before I go. This didn’t make the national headlines (that I saw), but I heard it on radio news yesterday. Apparently, there was some severe and deadly flooding the other day in Afghanistan. It’s a very scary story as it included children getting pulled out of some thick mud. Here is the article with the details: Severe Afghanistan Flooding.
