BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR)– For John Hussey and his family, D-Day has a strong meaning.
John Hussey from Moneta spoke with WFXR News at the D-Day Memorial in Bedford during the 80th Anniversary Ceremony about his father John Robert Hussey. John Robert Hussey was a second lieutenant on June 6 and a part of the 16th Infantry Company. Hussey shares he was in the same unit as many of the Bedford Boys.
Hussey’s father was killed in action on Omaha Beach, and like so many others who lost loved ones on that day, it will never be forgotten.
“Loss, a lot of loss,” said Hussey to WFXR News when asked about what D-Day personally means to him. “I miss my father.”
For Hussey, he continues to go to the Memorial and sees his dad’s name on the memory wall, paying honor and tribute to his father. He shows his father off to his family, especially his grandson, and so many others pointing out how important D-Day is and the remaining impact of the invasion.
“We should all know,” said Hussey, “One country attacked another country and we had to help the French get back their freedom and had to get rid of Adolf Hitler. Some young American Men and British men and Canadian men, a lot of American men, they died doing it.”
