HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Police have arrested a man and charged him with murder in the June 2023 shooting death of a Kecoughtan High School teacher.
Calvin Lamont Jackson, 46, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of Joi Kimitra Brown, 45, a health and physical education teacher at Kecoughtan, real estate professional and the mother of a pre-teen girl.
Police said Jackson turned himself into police at the Pat G. Minetti Public Safety Building this evening without incident.
Brown was found in her home with a gunshot wound to the head June 25, 2023. When police arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound and she was pronounced dead at the scene. A man inside the home suffered an unknown injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
Police said the incident appeared to be domestic-related.
Jackson, who was her longtime partner and father of their child before breaking up, also faces charges of the use or display of a firearm in commission of a felony; possess, transport firearms by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm or missile in/at an occupied building.
The chief medical examiner ruled Brown’s death a homicide.
On June 25, 2023, friends of Brown had not been able to get in touch with her all day.
“I knew something was wrong,” Tamika Dixson said. “I spoke to her daughter, and she said she hadn’t got in touch with her. At that moment, I knew that’s not normal for Joi.”
When Dixson stopped by Brown’s house, she found Brown on the floor of her bedroom, shot in the head. Brown’s ex-boyfriend, known as CJ, who lived at the house to co-parent, was also hurt.
“There was no other thought, besides he killed her. That was it. I found her and he did it,” Dixson said. “I was aware of what she was going through. She said to me, ‘one of us is going to end up dead.’”
