LOS ANGELES (WAVY) — Hampton University alumna Ruth E. Carter won an Academy Award on Sunday for her costume design work in the film “Black Panther.”
Carter was the first African-American costume designer to win the award. She was also the first African-American nominated for the category back in 1993 for her work Spike Lee’s “Malcom X.”
She’s been nominated one other time for her work on Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad” in 1998.
“Wow. Wow,” Carter said as she accepted the award. “I got this. This has been a longtime coming.”
Carter’s win wasn’t the only historical Oscar win for the movie “Black Panther”.
The film’s production designer, Hannah Beachler, is the first African-American winner in the category. Beachler wins the Oscar along with set designer Jay R. Hart.
“Black Panther” is the first superhero movie to be nominated for the coveted Oscar category, “Best Picture.”
Carter returned to Hampton’s campus last year to serve as keynote speaker for their 148th Commencement Ceremony.
