HARRISONBURG, Va. (WAVY) — There was no shortage of late-game dramatics, but Oscar Smith held on to defeat James Madison 21-20 to win the Class 6 state championship Saturday.

It’s the Tigers’ fifth state championship since 2008.

Trailing 14-7 late in the fourth quarter, Oscar Smith’s Lonnie Andrews threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Travis Johnson, and after a penalty, drilled a 35-yard extra point to tie the game.

James Madison fumbled on its ensuing possession, and the Tigers capitalized, getting a 2-yard run for a score from Brandon Nesbitt to cap a 46-yard drive. The extra point put Oscar Smith ahead 21-14 with 22 seconds left.

James Madison then had some late-game magic of its own, as Cael Yates completed a 48-yard Hail Mary to Dominic Knicely as time expired, cutting the Oscar Smith lead to 21-20.

But after a penalty for excessive celebration after its touchdown, James Madison opted to go for the 2-point conversion from the 13-yard line, but its pass fell incomplete in the end zone, allowing Oscar Smith to celebrate another state title.
