PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The Blue Angels were in town for the Oceana Air show this weekend, but before the big performance, they gave a local principal a once-in-a-lifetime ride as a way to say thank you for inspiring the next generation. Jay Lewter is the Principal at Hickory Elementary in Chesapeake and before the airshow, he climbed into the famous Blue Angels jet and got to experience what it’s like to fly in a high performance fighter jet. Lewter experienced loops, rolls, and high turns which is a unique experience he can share with his students. Students from Hickory Elementary also got a chance to see the Blue Angels first hand when all 5th graders from Chesapeake and Virginia Beach Public Schools got to attend the Airshow. It was part of the annual STEM education day… which included special STEM exhibits and a chance to see Navy aircraft up close.
