SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The third annual Dancing with the Characters event allows children to see some of their favorite cartoon characters in-person.
“Dancing with the Characters” is March 9 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the East Suffolk Recreation Center, 138 South 6th Street.
“We thought we could have several characters (in) one place for kids to dance and play [with],” said Characters 4 Kidz owner Christopher Hearn. “A lot of times parents can’t afford to go to big events, so we figured we’d just bring it to our neighborhood.”
This year, several community members and businesses partnered to provide the event free of cost with food and a toy giveaway.
“This year we have over 200 toys,” said Hearn. “It just warms our hearts.”
Elected officials, including Suffolk Mayor Michael Duman, are expected to attend.
Hearn says in previous years, former Suffolk Police Chief Al Chandler stopped by. This year, Interim Police Chief James “Danny” Buie may join in on the fun.
“They dance and they play with the characters and the kids as well,” said Hearn. “I kind of get a little teary eyed because it’s so exciting to see these kids — their faces light up!”
Hearn said it is important for families to come early because the event is first come, first served.
