Thanksgiving Holiday City Closings | 2024

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – Thanksgiving is a Federal Holiday so many city offices will be closed.

If your city is not included, it has not posted how city offices will be impacted by the holiday.


Chesapeake

Chesapeake City government offices, courts, community centers, public libraries, and Animal Services will have modified hours in observance of Thanksgiving.

Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday. It will re-open on Monday for regular business hours.

Chesapeake Integrated Behavioral Healthcare will do same-day intake from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Community Centers: Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday. It will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed again on Sunday.

Public Libraries: Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday. It will re-open on Saturday, Nov. 30. for normal hours.

DMV Select: Will close at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and remain closed the rest of the week.

Animal Services: Will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday but will re-open on Saturday.

The Chesapeake Visitor Center: Is closed Thanksgiving Day and Sunday, Dec. 1, and has modified hours the rest of the week. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

There will be no trash collections on Thanksgiving day. Thursday’s pickup will be collected on Friday, November 29. Friday’s trash collections will be made on Saturday, November 30.

Newport News

City offices and Libraries will be closed on Thanksgiving and Friday, Nov. 29.

Norfolk

The Commissioner of Revenue, City Treasurer, and the Norfolk Courthouse: Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and re-open for regular business hours on Monday, Dec. 2.

Recreation Centers: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will re-open on Saturday for regular business hours.

Norfolk Animal Care Center (NACC): Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will re-open on Saturday for regular business hours.

The Slover: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will re-open on Saturday for regular business hours.

Libraries – Barron F. Black, Blyden, Janaf, Lafayette, Larchmont, Little Creek, Park Place, Sargeant Memorial Collection, and Van Wyck: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The libraries will re-open on Monday for regular business hours.

The SPSA Norfolk Transfer Station: Will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28. It will re-open on Saturday for regular business hours.

Trash will not be collected on Thursday. Thursday’s routes will be collected on Saturday.

Portsmouth

City Hall Offices: Closed all day Wednesday, Nov. 27, Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29. It will re-open on Monday for regular business hours.

Public Libraries: Closed all day Wednesday, Nov. 27, Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29. Main Branch and Churchland Branch libraries reopening Saturday.

Trash Collection: Trash will not be collected on Thursday. Thursday’s routes will be collected on Saturday.

Welcome Center: Closed all day Wednesday, Nov. 27 and Thursday, Nov. 28. It will re-open on Friday for regular business hours.

Naval Shipyard Museum and the Art & Cultural Center: Will close on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. It will resume regular hours on Saturday.

Children’s Museum: Closed all day Wednesday, Nov. 27, Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29

Recreation Centers: Will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday. It will re-open on Saturday for regular business hours. Senior Station will be closed on Thursday and Friday. It will reopen on Monday.

Courts: Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and remain closed until Monday, Dec. 2.

Parks and Public Golf Courses: Will not be impacted.

Suffolk

Suffolk Bus Service will be closed on Thanksgiving day, but remain open with regular hours Wednesday and Friday.

There will be no trash collections on Thanksgiving day. Thursday’s pickup will be collected on Friday, November 29. Friday’s trash collections will be made on Saturday, November 30. Business trash will be picked up on Friday as usual.

Virginia Beach

Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office: Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday. It will re-open on Monday for regular business hours.

Virginia Beach Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts, and Clerk’s Offices: Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday. It will re-open on Monday for regular business hours.

Virginia Beach Department of Public Health: Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday. It will re-open on Monday for regular business hours.

TCC/City Joint-Use Library: Will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday. It will re-open on Monday for regular business hours.

Government Administrative Offices: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Public Libraries: Will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27th, and remain closed on Thursday and Friday.

Waste Management administrative offices, the Landfill and Resource Recovery Center, and the West Neck Recycling Center: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Virginia Beach Convention Center administrative offices: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 29 for the Virginia Beach Christmas Market.

City Parks and Park Facilities: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open Friday from sunrise to sunset.

Community Recreation Centers: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sandler Center for the Performing Arts box office and administrative offices: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open Friday from 5-8:30 p.m.

Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Animal Care and Adoption Center: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open Friday from noon to 5 p.m.

Farmers Market Management Office: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Trash will not be collected on Thursday. Thursday’s routes will be collected on Saturday.

Williamsburg

City Offices: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Municipal Building on Lafayette Street and Quarterpath Recreation Center: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Waller Mill Park: Will close on Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. It will re-open on Friday, Nov. 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Trash Collection will not be impacted, however, leaf collection will not happen on Thursday, Nov. 28, or Friday, Nov. 29. To check whether your home receives leaf collection services and on which route, you can look up your address on the city’s website.

Hampton Roads Transit

On Wednesday, Nov. 27, HRT bus, light rail, ferry, Base Express, paratransit, and OnDemand ridesharing services will operate on a regular schedule. The Downtown Norfolk Transit Center information booth will close at 4:30 p.m. All other transit center information booths will operate on normal schedules. The Customer Service call center will be available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.  
 
On Thursday, Nov. 28, in observance of Thanksgiving, most HRT bus routes will operate on a regular Sunday schedule, but some bus routes will operate on a modified Sunday schedule with service ending earlier. (Visit www.gohrt.com for details). The Tide light rail, Base Express, paratransit and OnDemand ridesharing will operate on a Sunday schedule. The ferry will not operate. Transit center information booths and the Customer Service call center will be closed. 
 
On Friday, Nov. 29, bus, light rail, Base Express, paratransit, and ridesharing services will operate on a Saturday schedule. The ferry will run on its regular schedule. Transit center information booths and the Customer Service call center will be closed. 

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes for holiday travel. VDOT suggests the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, the Route 17 James River Bridge, the free Jamestown-Scotland Ferry or I-95 to minimize potential delays.
