NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — This weekend, Step Up for the Up Center!
The annual fundraiser presented by ECPI University will take place at Harbor Park Stadium in Downtown Norfolk on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to noon.
The non-profit has over 20 programs for local children and families and is focused on prevention, intervention and support services.
Peggy Brown, Step Up Coordinator for The Up Center spoke to WAVY about the fundraiser at the Digital Desk. Watch the conversation in the video player on this page.
“We are hoping to get as many families there as possible,” Brown said.
Walk, jog, or run three laps on the lower concourses, equaling a mile. It’s for everyone, regardless of activity-level or ability.
“You have a lot of support,” Brown said. “There’s a lot of energy.”
Participants can take their time completing the course.
You can also come out to cheer on those taking on the mile, or donate to the event.
“We want to make sure that everyone knows that we are open to the whole family coming out and supporting this awesome event,” Brown said.
Participants in the region’s only stairclimbing event raises funds through the Family Promise Fund.
The event has raised about $600,000 for the fund.
That fund supports critical services that aid over 10,000 children, families, service members and individuals in the Hampton Roads community with disabilities. Services include counseling, early childhood education, and financial and career development.
“It is full, full, full of fun, energy and mission,” Brown said. “I think that’s where the energy comes from, because we know why we are running, why we’re walking.”
