VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The legendary band that closed out the original Dome will be the first to open the new Dome this summer.
Three Dog Night, which was the last act to perform at Alan B. Shepard Convention Center on June 30, 1993, will headline the festivities when The Dome reopens May 4.
Tickets for the grand reopening will be available starting Feb. 7, 2025, at 10 a.m. at TheDomeVB.com.
“We feel honored to play the opening concert of the new Dome,” said Danny Hutton, founder and lead singer of the band. “It’s very cool to return to the new venue 32 years after Three Dog Night performed the final show at the old Dome. We are looking forward to celebrating this event with everyone in Virginia Beach.”
The original Dome was a cultural hotspot for jazz, soul and psychedelic rock for more than two decades. The newly renovated venue will honor that legacy while featuring a fresh, innovative design.
“The energy of a live show stays with you,” said Matt Rogers, vice president of regional venue operations for Live Nation. “It was felt back in ’93 at The Dome with Three Dog Night, and now we have the privilege of reviving that experience for today’s fans. The Dome is the perfect venue to celebrate a generational love of music, connecting fans from the past and present in a uniquely modern yet legendary space.”
The reimagined space will include giant sliding doors that open to an expansive outdoor area, providing stunning views of Atlantic Park. In a nostalgic gesture, Live Nation will offer a fan giveaway for those who attended the last Dome concert in 1993 — and who have the ticket stub from Three Dog Night’s at the historic Dome — a free ticket to the grand reopening, as well as a commemorative poster.
To participate, fans with a stub should contact TheDomeVB@livenation.com. Available while supplies last.
“Bringing this legendary venue back to life is more than just reopening doors — it’s reigniting the spirit of live music that made The Dome iconic,” said Doug Higgons, senior vice president of Oak View Group. “After more than three decades, it’s time to restore the legacy of incredible live entertainment in Virginia Beach and create new memories for artists and fans alike.”
The schedule for The Dome’s reopening will include performances by Melissa Etheridge and Joss Stone May 5, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead May 22, Kevin James: Owls Don’t Walk, and Diana Krall June 6. The lineup will also feature other renowned artists such as Chicago and Alison Krauss & Union Station later in the summer.
