RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) – Senate Minority Leader Tommy Norment (R-James City County) confirmed Sunday night that he will not be running for a ninth straight term.
The Senator confirmed the news with 10 On Your Side’s Brett Hall and when asked about his retirement, Sen. Norment said “it is time.”
This news comes after Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax) a week prior that he will also not be running next year.
Sen. Norment and Sen. Saslaw have switched back and forth between minority and majority leaders since 2008.
Norment represents District 3 which covers parts of Hampton, Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, and James City County.
Recently, the senator created a bill that would allow police chiefs to make curfews during civil unrest situations.
The bill was passed in the Senate and House, and is awaiting the governor’s signature for it to go into law.
In 2022, Norment’s sexual assault bill went into law. It requires school principals to report sexual assault to the police.
In 2018, Norment got the “Tommy Tax” approved. This created a 1 percent state sales and use tax in the Historic Triangle.
Norment’s term as Senator ends in January 2024.
