CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – A 1-year-old who was shot Wednesday evening in the area of Bainbridge Boulevard and Jefferson Street in Chesapeake is out of the hospital and is expected to survive, Chesapeake Police said.

A Chesapeake Police Department spokesman said the child received treatment for a single gunshot would.

Police said they received a call around 8:08 p.m. that a child had been shot and was being taken to another location. Officers made contact with the mother and the child, and found that the vehicle they were in was damaged by bullets.

Creekmore Hardware, near the intersection of Bainbridge Boulevard and Jefferson Street, where the shooting occurred, was closed for the day at the time of the shooting, according to its owner, Mike Creekmore. His family has owned the store for 74 years, but, in that time, he said nothing this serious has happened this close.

“We haven’t been having problems like that in the neighborhood at all, an occasional shooting maybe in the surrounding area maybe but nothing this close,” Creekmore said.

A neighbor, Douglas Brooks, said his neighborhood is quiet and peaceful.

“That is the first, hopefully the last, shouldn’t have happened at all,” he said. “Very peaceful neighborhood around here. Like I said there’s kids. It’s good, it’s peaceful around here. That’s why I stay around this way out here. Hope it continue to stay that way.”
