NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Norfolk Police are investigating a deadly late-night shooting that left one man dead and one injured at a 7-Eleven.

According to police, a shooting occurred inside a 7-Eleven store just off Hampton Boulevard at 1088 W. 26th St. It was reported around 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, May 11. Officers responded and found a 7-Eleven employee, a 22-year-old man, with a non life-threatening gunshot wound.

Outside the store, first responders found a man suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. The man, Walter E. Painter, 25, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His mother, Crystal Chesson, told 10 On Your Side police haven’t spoken to her since initially notifying her of her son’s passing.

“I am his mother; I deserve to know what happened to my son,” she said.

She said she’s devastated that she still has few answers on what happened to her only son.

“The Norfolk Police Department has done nothing for me to notify me clearly on what has happened to my son. My heart is very saddened. A part of my world is gone. I no longer have my son here with me.”

She said her son leaves behind many loved ones.

“He has three sons that are going to dearly miss him.”

Without their father, she’ll continue to support them.

“Right now, it looks like we’re going to try to stay together as a family as we always have been.”

After this tragedy, she found kindness in the community, like from the funeral director planning her son’s service.

“This young man embraced me today as if I was family, as if he identified that I did lose my child and that meant the world to me.”

She had a message for whoever took her son away from her.

“If you have a bone of human shred left in your body, we pray for you that you will go and turn yourself in.”

This shooting occurred one week after another Hampton Roads 7-Eleven. On Friday, May 5 a 20-year-old employee at a Suffolk 7-Eleven was shot and killed.
