NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A man has died following a stabbing on Verdun Avenue in Norfolk Wednesday evening, but the city’s Commonwealth’s Attorney said he doesn’t believe a crime was committed.

The call for an assault in progress came in around 8:16 p.m. in the 2900 block of Verdun Ave. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man suffering from a life-threatening stab wound.

The man, later identified as 33-year-old Joseph Warner II, was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Police say a preliminary investigation shows that Warner was stabbed by a resident after he entered their home. Police are not looking for any suspects.

The investigation is ongoing, but Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi said he did not expect any charges to result from the incident.

“Last night I was with (Norfolk Police) at the scene of the stabbing on Verdun Ave.,” Fatehi said in a social media post. “I was able to view the scene (and) review the preliminary evidence (and) statements with NPD. While this is a tragic situation, the evidence points to a use of force in legally justifiable self-defense and therefore does not show a crime.”

He said Norfolk Police would send a final report to his office for it to review “in the unlikely event that subsequent evidence supports a different conclusion.”
