ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – For Doggie Styles owner Shannon Forbes, the vehicle that crashed into her Elizabeth City pet grooming business last Friday morning was her worst nightmare.

She often looks at the row of cars and thinks about the possibility of someone losing control.

Last Friday, a 2021 Jeep made a hard right turn and smashed into the column. The Jeep kept going and drove into her grooming salon, according to the police report.

At the time, Forbes was working on a four-legged friend.

“I was starting to dry a dog and the dryers are quite loud,” she said. “I felt the dryers shake and I said, ‘What the heck is going on?'”

She walked out to find a blue Jeep inches from her back wall.

“I can’t believe it happened,” Forbes said.

Once she composed herself, she realized two small dogs were under the car. Luckily, no animals or people were hurt.

“I was mortified that those dogs were crushed and by God’s grace, they were OK,” she said.

The driver said she didn’t know what happened, according to the report.

Police say the estimated damage is around $10,000.

Forbes said she is working with the insurance company. She says their first priority is the building repairs.

“All of what needs to happen in this building is going to take priority over our wages and my peoples’ wages and our equipment that was broken and lost,” Forbes said.

A GoFundMe has been started to help with the damaged equipment and the groomers who will be out of work for an unknown period. In the post it notes that “the damage is extensive and emotionally we are completely wrecked. By God’s grace, no people or animals were injured, but rebuilding is going to be an immeasurable task.”
