GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — A woman is dead and her husband is in the hospital with burns after a house fire Tuesday afternoon in Gloucester.

The fire broke out just before 2 p.m. at a home in the 2700 block of Hickory Fork Road, according to Gloucester Fire Spokesperson Hannah Carson. The caller told dispatchers that one person was still inside.

Carson says units arrived minutes later and found the home fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters found 82-year-old Maezine Nixon dead inside and 83-year-old Fredrick Nixon of the home with burns and an apparent broken leg. He was taken to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.

Officials says Fredrick Nixon was burned trying to rescue his wife from the flames.

The fire was extinguished in 20 minutes, and the home is considered a total loss. Carson says the fire has been ruled accidental.
