SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (WNCN) — A young man is being treated for injuries after an incident Tuesday at a North Carolina beach, according to the Sunset Beach Police Department.

At about 11:23 a.m., officers said they were called to East Main Street near 11th Street in reference to a 20-year-old man who was hurt while swimming.

When officers arrived, they said the man had suffered a laceration to his lower leg while he was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.

Police said the incident was originally reported as a shark bite, however, it is unknown what exactly caused the injury.

“It appears the injury was caused by some sort of sea life,” the police department said.

According to police, EMS immediately took the man to the hospital for treatment.

The police department said they do not have any other information to report at this time.
