CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) — A $6.9 million project to repave roads and parking areas at three national parks in North Carolina is now underway.
The National Park Service said in a news release contractors from Bryant’s Land and Development Industries, Inc. started working at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on Tuesday morning.
The work will include pavement preservation treatment, asphalt patching, crack cleaning and sealing and striping.
The park service said pavement preservation is expected to be completed over the next two months at areas including Lighthouse Road in Buxton, the Cape Point and Frisco Campgrounds and public parking areas in the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse district.
There will be a three-month summer break in the project — between the Friday before Memorial Day and Labor Day — before crews begin working on roads and parking areas on Ocracoke Island. This will be followed by more work on Hatteras and Bodie islands.
The park service said crews will shift the work to the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial once work is complete at Cape Hatteras.
The entire project is expected to be fully completed by next spring.
