NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk woman is in jail without bond, charged with the murder of an 18-month-old child who was left in her care.

Ashadiya’ Xolani Brooks, of the 1100 block of Porter Road, was arrested on Thursday and charged with second-degree murder in the case.

The child died at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters two days after being found unresponsive at Brooks’ home on Oct. 23 around 12:15 p.m.

An autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk determined the child’s death was a homicide, police say.

10 On Your Side reached out to Brook’s husband, who says she is a loving and compassionate woman and would never do anything to harm a child.

Court paperwork says Brooks has been in Norfolk for 13 years. Documents also say she was unemployed and living off family support.

Brooks was denied bond in a hearing on Nov. 7, and is due back in court Dec. 17.

No other details have been released by Norfolk detectives, but they ask anyone with information to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
