VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Phil Williams has a license plate that reads MUZC MAN — but it’s his daughter who has topped the charts. Crystal Kay is a major star in Japan.

That’s where Williams met his ex-wife and Crystal’s mother, who was a professional singer. So Crystal Kay gets her talent from both sides.

“She’s doing fantastic there,” Williams says with an obvious sense of pride.

Williams spent his entire 20-year Navy career in Japan and is rated 100% disabled.

“Both knees, three operations on each knee.”

Williams wants to use his Navy vocational/rehabilitation benefits to become an audio engineer, and play a bigger part in his daughter’s career. He’s already completed the basic course, but he wants to take it a step further.

“(The basic course) shows you how to connect the wiring in the studio. With the advanced portion, I can run it myself.

Williams is living temporarily in Virginia Beach but has a home in Yokohama. As an audio engineer, he could build a studio at home.

“Inside my home, I can have her in the studio, creating her own even English version of her music. That’s my goal.”

Crystal Kay performs live throughout Japan every week. Williams says now she has a very pop sound. As an engineer, he could have more influence on her overall vibe.

“During her concerts, I can tell them no, that’s the Japanese way. Her concert is not like that.”

Williams says the company that gave him the basic training uses an effective personalized approach and would be perfect for the advanced course.

“You’re sitting in the studio with a professional audio engineer one on one.”

Williams says the VA wants him to go to a more traditional college. We’re contacting them in Washington to find out why they can’t move forward with the advanced audio training Williams wants.
