PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A bicyclist was killed late Tuesday night after police say he was hit near the Churchland Bridge in Portsmouth.
Portsmouth police say officers were called to the intersection of High Street and Shenandoah Street, near the base of the Churchland Bridge, around 10:35 p.m. for a crash involving a bicyclist and a private ambulance.
Police say the bicyclist, 45-year-old Christopher M. Wilkins, of Suffolk, was injured and unresponsive when officers arrived — with citizens trying perform life-saving measures.
Wilkins was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Angelia Wilkins, Christopher’s ex wife says she’s in disbelief that he’s gone.
“It’s been hard, trying to believe this really happened to him, that he went out the way he did,” explained Wilkins.
Wilkins says she has a lot of questions she’s hoping to get answers to.
“I just want to know why, did they see him? What happened? How did they not see him? To hit him and have him leave behind children,” she asked.
Police say the crash is still under investigation, with no additional information available. It is unclear whether anyone will be charged.
