COINJOCK, NC (WITN) – A group that watches over a herd of wild horses on the Outer Banks is hoping to educate tourists not to feed them.

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund has erected a billboard in Coinjock that says “Admire But Don’t Feed! Apples and Carrots Kill Wild Horses.”

Wild horses can only safely eat food from their natural habitat of beach grass.

The group says much of the public is unaware that snacks are harmful and often cause painful colic that could result in death.

The 10-foot by 60-foot billboard was donated by the property owners, while the cost of the vinyl wrap was donated, and a sign company installed it for free.

Area radio stations will also be running public service announcements explaining why the wild horses shouldn’t be fed, 4-foot square yard signs are being erected, while many Duck and Corolla businesses are donating their marquees this summer to promote the “No Feed, No Approach” campaign.
