NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WAVY) — The Bonner Bridge will be temporarily closed to the public, starting this week, as crews prepare to dismantle it.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) says they will be installing gates and fences around the southern end of the Bonner Bridge and adjoining catwalks. It will be off-limits to the public as demolition takes place.
According to NCDOT, it will take about a year to tear down the Bonner Bridge.
In 2020, 1,000 of the bridge will re-open as a public walkway. The new Marc Basnight Bridge is currently open to traffic.
