CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WITN)- The National Park Service says that Cape Hatteras National Seashore is posting June visitation numbers not seen in well over a decade.
Officials say that the 389,722 visitors last month made the seashore the busiest it’s been since June of 2002.
The seashore also saw an almost 9% increase in total recreational visits in June compared to June of 2017, according to officials.
We’re also told that so far in 2018, the seashore has hosted 1,130,473 recreational visits, up almost 12% from the same period last year.
Visitation estimates are collected by counting southbound vehicles just north of the Bonner Bridge and using a multiplier to estimate the total number of passengers heading south. Those estimates are added to the number of passengers going to Ocracoke Island from Cedar Island and Swan Quarter.
