HAMPTON, Va (WAVY) –     A family in Hampton is looking for help after a car plowed into their home, destroying it.

Racheal Russell has a young daughter and has been dealing with complications from her birth.

And despite a couple of days’ help from the Red Cross — the family is still struggling. Russell said a week ago she never would have thought her family would be homeless.

“We came home to six police cars and the fire department and they told us that a car had came off I-64 through that bush over there and hit our home, ” explained Russell

According to officials, the driver said it was a sneeze that initially led him off course just after 4 Wednesday afternoon.

“I didn’t know what to think. I was like well what do we do we have two kids, we stay to ourselves,” said Russell.

There is not a big obvious hole in the wall, but the wreck left enough damage to the structural damage for the home to be ruled unlivable.

“The red cross came, They told us that they would get us a hotel for a few days they gave us a card that has a food limit on it and we would have to pick a hotel and cost and budget everything ourselves,” said Russell.

Racheal said she is a prideful woman who would normally figure it out as she goes, but says in this instance she can’t because she has two young lives to think about. That is what led her to 10 On Your Side.

“I’m doing it for my kids so that my kids don’t become homeless. We’ve done everything that we could to make sure that they are taken care of and we’re working so it’s just rough.”

Russell said it’s a lot to swallow knowing one day you have a roof over your head and the next you don’t, but nonetheless is glad a home is all they lost

“My son could of been out here playing in the yard when this happened or he could have been in his room anything could have happened if we would have been here. I thank God that we weren’t here.”
