CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Charles City County Sheriff’s Office deputy died on Sunday from a medical emergency following an altercation that took place between an individual, law enforcement and EMS.

At around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, Sergeant Floyd H. Miles, Jr. was monitoring traffic at the intersection of John Tyler Memorial Highway and Wayside Road when an individual on a moped approached his vehicle.

According to a spokesperson for the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office, as the individual approached Miles’ vehicle, the moped fell onto the vehicle. Miles then noticed blood on the individual and asked if they were okay.

The individual then told Miles that people were after him and trying to kill him. According to the spokesperson, the individual would repeat this several times to Miles. The deputy then placed the individual into the back of his vehicle and called EMS for further observation.

Once Charles City County Fire and EMS arrived to the scene, they transferred the individual into the back of the ambulance. After several minutes, Miles returned to the back of the ambulance where the individual then became combative towards the deputy and struck him.

According to the spokesperson, after Miles was struck, a struggle ensued between the individual, law enforcement and EMS. As a result of this struggle, Miles suffered a “medical emergency.”

Miles was rushed to a nearby medical center where he later died due to the medical emergency. According to the spokesperson, the individual was transported to an area hospital for examination and observation.

Virginia State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

According to the spokesperson, Miles was born and raised in Charles City County. He served the Sheriff’s Office for 16 years and was supervisor of Patrol and Animal Control.
