CAPE CHARLES, Va. (WAVY) – Many of the tall trees that shade Cherrystone campground in Cape Charles were toppled by Tropical Storm Michael’s fury.
As a result of the extensive damage caused by the late night storm, the campground on Virginia’s Eastern Shore is now closed.
This is likely disappointing news for the guests who planned to stay there this weekend, but the current conditions are not safe. Despite all the damage, the good news is there are no reported injuries at this time.
The campground is working to evacuate the grounds and make sure anyone there when the storm blew through gets out safely.
Officials there said they are also in the process of contacting anyone scheduled to check in over the weekend. Their goal is to reopen the following weekend. Stay with WAVY for updates.
If you have questions you can email clerks@cherrystone.com or call the Welcome Center at 757-331-3063, but be aware that the phone lines are extremely busy now.
Cherrystone Campground has been hit hard by severe weather in the past. Tragedy struck on July 24, 2014. Three members of a New Jersey family were killed when a tornado touched down; a mother, father and their 13-year-old son.
