NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command is partnering with Chick-fil-A to make sure children in Hampton Roads go back to school with the “write stuff.”
For over 30 years, the “Write Stuff” initiative has provided students in grades K through 12 who reside in Chesapeake, Norfolk or Virginia Beach with backpacks.
Families who do not reside in these cities should contact the Salvation Army location closest to them for assistance.
They will hold a school supply drive on Tuesday, July 16 from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Broad Creek Crossing, 1205 N. Military Highway in Norfolk.
Those who donate new school supplies or make a monetary donation during the supply drive will receive a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A sandwich or chicken nuggets.
The Backpacks will be distributed at the Hampton Roads Kroc Center, 401 Ballentine Blvd. in Norfolk on Friday, Aug. 9 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Those in attendance must provide the following documentation in order to receive a backpack:
- Unexpired government-issued ID for parent/guardian– If you are not the biological parent or legal custodian of the child you are applying for, we will not be able to assist.
- Proof of physical address– We will accept your Virginia ID/driver’s license for this in most cases. If the address on your ID is different than where you currently reside, please also bring a lease, mortgage statement, or utility bill with your name/address.
- Children’s birth certificates – Required to verify all school-aged children’s ages. If you are not the biological parent of the child, you will also need to provide additional custodial documentation listing you as their legal guardian.
