NEWPORT NEWS (WAVY) – Christopher Newport University has been knocking on the door of a national title for the past decade.

But it was their rivals from across the water to reach the top of the mountain first.

Virginia Wesleyan went on to capture their first national championship in program history a season ago. “If they can win a national championship, we can too,” said senior outfielder Leah Andrews.

She and the Captains will have their chance this weekend, when they host an NCAA regional at their home field. One of the three visiting teams…the defending champs.

“What better opportunity?” said senior shortstop Savannah Couch. “We’re going to have to get through them eventually, we’re going to have to go out and play them, what better place to d that than here?”

The Captains (35-8) are ranked third in the nation, while Wesleyan heads to Newport News as the top-ranked club. Both will have to earn first-round wins before seeing each other, with the Marlins set to face Gettysburg College and the Captains set to face Messiah College.

CNU’s first game is schedule for Friday at noon.
