NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — It’s been about a week and a half since a 10-year-old Newport News boy was shot in the head at a party. Saturday, community members held a fundraiser to help him out.
Family, friends and boy scout members held a car wash to raise money to help with Malachi’s medical expenses.
He was shot in the head on June 6 and was flown to CHKD for immediate brain surgery.
Malachi’s family says he is out of the ICU, but will need surgery in six weeks to either plug or cover the hole in his skull.
His godmother says he’s making strides, but still has a long road ahead.
Toni Eckert, Malachi’s godmother, said, ‘Every time he reaches another milestone or does something else that we’re amazed with because you think about someone being shot in the head, and you’re just, you’re taken aback because its just unfathomable that they’d be talking. It’s unfathomable that they’d be sitting up in bed.”
Malachi’s family says they are grateful for the support and prayers from the community.
The organizers of the car wash hope it helps with any future medical expenses.

Eckert said, “It’s unbelievable, it’s unfathomable, it’s great to see the community come together, especially with such tragedy. We have great people out here, willing to give, knowing that there’s people that support you, even if they don’t know you, is amazing.”
