RALEIGH, N.C. (WAVY) — Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency for North Carolina ahead of system that could bring winter weather to the parts of the state.
Cooper said in a media briefing Friday roads are expected to be “treacherous” across the state, specifically to the north and east of Interstate 85. The governor said some areas could see up to a foot of snow this weekend.

Winter storm watches and warnings have been issued for western North Carolina and western Virginia.
The system is forecast to largely bring rain to the Hampton Roads region, with the possibility of a brief change into a wintry mix Monday morning.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam urged residents to prepare early for the storm.
Northam said in a statement, “Our state agencies are taking necessary precautions to keep everyone safe—I urge all Virginians to take this winter weather threat seriously and make sure your homes, businesses, and families are prepared for this storm and other events ahead this winter.”
