RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Did you know that you can contribute to scientific research by simply counting the variety of birds in your backyard? The Department of Conservation and Recreation has encouraged Virginia residents to participate in this effort as part of the annual Great Backyard Bird Count.

Each year in February, millions of people count the species of birds that they see and hear in their own backyards over the course of four days. This year, the count will take place between Friday, Feb. 16, and Monday, Feb. 19.

According to the Department of Conservation and Recreation, these observations help scientists better understand bird populations around the world before one of their annual migrations.

To participate, you simply log the birds you count for 15 minutes on at least one out of four days of the event.

It’s suggested to download the Merlin Bird ID app to help identify the birds in the area, and participants can use the eBird Mobile app to enter bird sightings.

Don’t have a backyard, or looking for a change of scenery? You can find an event or related program at each of the following State Parks:

“Virginia State Parks offer a unique and scenic location to view various birds this time of the year,” said Powhatan State Park Manager Amelia Hulth. “On Saturday, Feb. 17, we will offer a fun ranger-led activity where guests will discover more about our feathered friends that can be found in the park or in their backyard. For the second part of the program, we’ll use peanut butter or vegetable shortening, sweet gum balls, sticks and pinecones to make feeders that provide tasty treats for our winged friends. You can hang the feeder in your backyard and see who comes to visit.”
