PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Two people were injured after two fires broke out hours apart Wednesday night at one Portsmouth house.

Portsmouth Fire Chief Jim Hoffler said crews were called to the initial fire around 8:30 p.m. on Jefferson Street. A fire was reported throughout a single-story house.

One person was rescued and taken to Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in stable condition. Hoffler said that fire was out around 8:50 p.m.

Crews from Navy Regional Mid-Atlantic Fire and Emergency Services (Norfolk Naval Shipyard) also responded to the initial call.

Portsmouth crews returned to the scene just after 11:30 p.m. for a second fire — which was reportedly suspicious. Hoffler said this fire caused “significant damage” to the back of the house.

One person was injured and taken to the hospital in stable condition. Both fires are under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
