CURRITUCK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A North Carolina man tried to shuffle away after being caught stealing crabs near Troublesome Point on Currituck Sound, authorities say.
The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office says David Dixon Jr., of Gibbs Woods, was arrested late Friday night during a joint operation with the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries.
Authorities were investigating a report of larceny of crabs from several local fishermen, and found Dixon around 11:30 p.m. near Troublesome Point, north of the town of Currituck. When officers approached, authorities say Dixon jumped overboard and tried to swim away, but he was quickly taken into custody and his vessel was seized.
Dixon faces a long list of charges and violations, including: resisting a public officer, stealing crabs from pots, unlawful possession of fish, disposal of evidence upon approach, failure to allow inspection, simple possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, operating a vessel without registration and operating a vessel at night without lights.
The case is still under investigation, and Dixon could face additional charges, authorities say.
