NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The alleged getaway driver involved in the July 27 armed bank robbery at a Navy Federal Credit Union on Jefferson Avenue was arrested on Wednesday, police said. A woman who was in the front seat was also arrested.
According to officials, 45-year-old Martel Joffrion was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit entering a bank armed with intent to commit larceny while armed, conspiracy to commit grand larceny and possession of ammunition by a violent felon.
Police said Joffrion was the driver of the vehicle, which was located by police in the 3100 block of Radius Way in the Jefferson Market Place parking lot, just five minutes after the bank robbery.
Joffrion and a woman in the front seat exited the vehicle in response to officer commands and were then detained, according to police.
The woman was identified as 34-year-old Dominique Butts. She was arrested on Aug. 2 and charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit entering a bank with the intent to commit larceny while armed and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.
A separate individual, later identified as 39-year-old Stephen Williams of Hampton, exited the vehicle and pointed a gun at the officers, according to police. Officers then shot at Williams. He was then transferred to a hospital where he later died. No officers were injured.
