Search by ground and air for armed robbery suspect in Currituck Co. ends in Chesapeake

CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – The search for an armed robbery suspect in Currituck County ended in Chesapeake Monday afternoon.

It all began around 9:30 a.m. when the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed robbery in the parking lot of the Food Lion in Grandy.


According to Sheriff M.W. Beickert, a suspect armed with a 9mm handgun stole a laptop/tablet from the victim at gunpoint.

Deputies responded and pursued the suspect vehicle, a Ford Explorer truck, which they determined was stolen from Chesapeake.

Sheriff Beickert said the suspect ditched the truck after firing a round through the passenger window; he then ran into the woods by the rest area.

Deputies surrounded the area and even used SWAT and the Dare Med Flight to search for the suspect.

The suspect emerged onto the highway, where he reportedly stole a truck at gunpoint, then drove to Chesapeake where he was finally taken into custody during a foot chase.

Law enforcement did not report any injuries.

The person taken into custody is Bryant Marcus Wilkerson, 27. The sheriff’s office said he is facing a long list of charges out of both Chesapeake and Currituck County, ranging from discharging a firearm and felony eluding police.
