VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach man who shot and killed another man back in 2020 on Holland Road will serve 15 years in prison, Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin Stolle announced Tuesday.
This comes after Collins, 28, was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm on school property after a three-day trial this March.
The commonwealth says their evidence proved that on July 22, 2020, Collins shot Nicholas Lutz multiple times, and then stood over him and shot him again. He was shot three times in total in the back, prosecutors say.
Lutz and a friend were walking home from a bar on Holland Road at the time when they encountered Collins. The commonwealth says Collins was arrested several hours later and eventually confessed to the shooting, claiming it was self-defense.
They say Collins left a book bag of personal items and a gun at a nearby elementary school. The bullets, casings and firearm were all forensically linked to Collins.
The 15-year sentence was the maximum for the charges.
