NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A longtime business owner is dead and another man faces serious injuries after a double shooting in the Lindenwood area of Norfolk.
It happened in front of Triple C Convenience, a small convenience store.
Norfolk officers got the call shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday night, according to Chief Mark Talbot. Talbot said their preliminary investigation found that an argument between “several males” occurred on both sides of the street.
“As a result of the dispute, somebody in the crowd, pulls out a handgun and fires a number of shots,” Talbot said. “We’ve collected around nearly a dozen shell casings.”
One of the bullets hit 84-year-old James Carter in the head, killing him.
Talbot said Carter, the longtime owner of Triple C, was an innocent bystander. He was possibly trying to break up the argument.
A woman on scene, who didn’t wish to be identified, referred to Carter as “Pops” and said he could be found in the store from “sun up to sun down.”
“He wouldn’t let anyone else do it,” the woman said.
Social media began filling up with tributes to Carter.
Carter was the longtime owner of the Merrimac Market that used to sit in the Broad Creek community.
Norfolk issued the current business license for Triple C Convenience, spelled differently than the store sign, in 2017 to Dwayne Carter, according to the city’s commissioner of the revenue office.
Dwayne is James Carter’s son.
Another man was shot and taken to the hospital, according to Talbot. He is expected to survive his injuries. A GoFundMe was made to help cover some of his medical expenses. Click here to help.
Police have no suspect information at this time, however security cameras are mounted on the small building and doorbell cameras could be seen on neighboring homes.
