YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — The man accused of shooting a James City County police car more than 100 times was in court Thursday morning, arraigned on multiple charges, including two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Later in the day, officials announced additional charges.

Andrew Susalis was appointed an attorney as he was arraigned on eight charges — two counts of attempted murder in the second degree, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, two counts of reckless handling of a firearm, and one count each of destruction of property and shooting at an occupied building.

10 On Your Side spoke with Susalis father, who didn’t want to go on camera, but said he wants the officers to know he’s sorry.

A neighbor told 10 On Your Side he was working in his backyard when he heard what he thought was fireworks. He came around to the front of his house to see what was happening and saw what he described as “a large police presence.” He and his wife said they are glad no one was seriously injured.

Another neighbor pointed out to WAVY chips in the road. He said those were from bullets that were fired at the police vehicle.

James City County Police were conducting a road rage investigation when it turned into a shooting Wednesday at a home in York County, as a police vehicle was struck with at least 100 bullet holes in what law enforcement officials described as “an ambush.”

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office announced additional charges Thursday, as Susalis also faces three counts of attempted aggravated murder of law enforcement officers.
