WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — After a barricade situation that spanned hours on Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said it successfully negotiated the surrender of a gunman who shot three officers in Southeast D.C.

At about 7:30 a.m., officers responded to the 5000 block of Hanna Place, SE to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect for cruelty to animals. While outside of the home, the suspect fired multiple times through the door, hitting three MPD officers.

A fourth officer was also injured but it was not gunshot-related, according to police.

The suspect barricaded himself inside and shot sporadically throughout the day. After several hours of negotiation, he surrendered.

Police identified the suspect as 46-year-old Julius James, of Southeast D.C. He was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. Additional charges for the assault on the officers are pending.

The four injured officers are in stable condition and expected to recover.

The incident is under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division. The officers’ body-worn camera footage will be released, though MPD did not say when.
