WJCC Schools COVID-19 dashboard updates

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) – Williamsburg/James City County (WJCC) Public Schools is now reporting 25 positive coronavirus cases involving staff members and students this week.

This information is listed on the school district’s COVID-19 dashboard, which breaks down data by school.

On Nov. 16, the dashboard noted the first case involving a student, reported at Stonehouse Elementary School.

As of Jan. 6, the dashboard shows a total of 62 confirmed cases since July 1, including 15 positive student tests. The breakdown is as follows:

• Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School – 1 staff positive case (reported 9/17)
• J. Blaine Blayton Elementary School – 5 staff positive case (reported 11/6 & 12/9 x2 & 12/31 & 1/2)
• James River Elementary School – 2 staff positive cases (reported 12/11 & 1/4)
• Laurel Lane Elementary School – 1 staff positive case (reported 1/2), 1 student positive case (reported 11/24)
• Matoaka Elementary School – 3 staff positive cases (reported 10/24, 10/28, 10/29)
• D.J. Montague Elementary – 1 student positive case (reported 12/2)
• Stonehouse Elementary School – 2 student positive cases (reported 11/16 & 12/7)
• Matthew Whaley Elementary – 1 student case (reported 12/3)
• Berkeley Middle School – 2 staff positive cases (reported 8/29 & 9/15)
• James Blair Middle School – 5 staff positive case (reported 12/3 & 12/7 & 12/10 & 12/23 & 12/30)
• Lois S. Hornsby Middle School – 4 staff positive case (reported 12/1 & 12/31 & 1/5 & 1/6)
• Toano Middle School – 3 staff positive case (reported 11/04 & 12/27 & 12/31), 2 student positive cases (12/31 & 01/5)
• Jamestown High School – 2 staff positive case (reported 10/30 & 12/27), 1 positive student case (reported 1/6)
• Warhill High School – 6 staff positive cases (reported 10/19, 11/4, 11/9, 11/11 (2), & 11/12)
• Operations – 6 staff positive cases (reported 7/28 & 12/3 & 12/8 & 12/11 & 12/15)
• Central Office – 3 staff positive cases reported (reported 9/25 & 12/3 & 12/7)
• Norge Elementary School – 1 staff positive case (reported 1/4), 1 student positive case (1/5)

The Virginia Department of Health Outbreaks in School Settings page lists Matoaka Elementary School as having an “outbreak in progress” as of Oct. 30. On Dec. 4, the VDH site listed Matoaka’s outbreak as ‘pending closure.’

While VDH does not list the number of confirmed cases, the Williamsburg schools dashboard shows there have been three confirmed cases.

According to VDH, in order for cases at a school to be declared an outbreak, “transmission must occur within the school facility or at a school-sponsored event among students, faculty, staff, or visitors.”

There are four Paths in the WJCC Schools Return to Learn plan.

WJCC Schools welcomed back students in grades PreK-3 for blended (in-person and remote) learning on Path 2 on Oct. 26.

Once WJCC Schools transition to Path 2, students in grades K-3 will be in school buildings two days a week on alternating days. The student’s last name will determine their attendance days.

Path 2 also includes in-person learning for Bright Beginnings PreK students four days a week. Students with disabilities and English Language Learners who returned to school in September will remain in classrooms for on-site learning.

All students and staff are required to wear a face covering while on the bus and at school.

WJCC School announced it was resuming remote learning for all students the week following Thanksgiving (Nov. 30 – Dec. 4) and the week after winter break (Jan. 4-8).

In addition, on Nov. 23, WJCC Schools announced its decision to cancel all winter sports for the 2020/2021 school year, citing an increase in coronavirus cases in the health district.

“The COVID numbers keep climbing, and we will not place students in a situation where their health and safety are at risk,” said WJCC Schools Superintendent Olwen E. Herron.
