WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — For the second year in a row, the School of Drama at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts has been ranked third on The Hollywood Reporter’s 2024 list of “The World’s 25 Best Drama Schools.

According to a press release from UNCSA, the institution is second among bachelor of fine arts programs included on the list and is the only public American institution in the top eight programs. UNCSA has made the list every year since 2012.

UNCSA prepares young performers for careers on stage, online and in film and television, giving them lessons grounded in classical values, on-camera training, opportunities for creative entrepreneurship and exposure to professionals in the American entertainment industry.

The Hollywood Reporter says the School of Drama “has placed an emphasis in recent years on student work and devised theater, added on-camera training for students across all four years and expanded its performance repertoire to include more underrepresented voices,” under the leadership of retiring Dean Scott Zigler.

“This past year, the school added more opportunities for voiceover work, along with courses on entrepreneurship, and it worked to develop a pedagogy for trans and nonbinary performers,” The Hollywood Reporter said.

The article also highlights the school’s low tuition in comparison to others on the list, which is $24,231 a year for out-of-state students and $6,497 for in-state students.

Notable UNCSA alumni include Elizabeth Lail (“Gossip Girl,” “You”), Brett Gelman (“Stranger Things,” AMC’s “Mad Men”), Stephen McKinley Henderson (“Fences,” “Dune”) and many more.
