PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A boat caught fire at Nautical Boats Marina on Sunday, injuring one responding firefighter and leaving its owner homeless.

According to Portsmouth Fire and Rescue officials, they were dispatched to the boat fire around 5:35 p.m.

The boat was located at the end of a dock at the marina, located in the 3800 block of Adams Street. Firefighters say the boat was fully engulfed when they arrived.

Approximately 800 feet of attack line was manually stretched down the dock to reach the boat, firefighters say. The fire was marked under control by 6:12 p.m.

One firefighter was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, but no other injuries were reported.

“It’s a nightmare, definitely,” said Anthony Cottingham, who tells 10 On Your Side he is the owner of the 1979 Uniflite 37 foot sport fishing yacht that went up in flames.

“All you see now is it looks like there was no boat ever there,” Cottingham said.

The Coast Guard responded to help mitigate any environment issues that may come as a result of the fire. Norfolk Fire and Rescue also assisted with their fire boat.
