HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton’s Summer Youth Employment Program is looking for both employees and employers to sign up for summer 2019.
The city-funded program runs from June 17 to August 30, and gives Hampton residents between 16-24 years old the chance to gain job training and experience with either a Hampton city department, non-profit or private business. Youth partcipants can earn up to $1,500 overall though the program. With 10, 20-hour work weeks, that’s about $7.50 per hour.
In addition to providing valuable job training and experience for local youth, the city says it covers students’ pay for employers, which received about $30,000 worth of labor through the program last summer.
“It really was an adventure,” said Jakayla Scott, of Phoebus High School, in a press release from the city. “I experienced a great working environment and met amazing people. I would recommend this program to any teens in my area.” Scott participated in the program last summer.
“This program benefits not just the participating young people and businesses, but it has an impact on the broader community by increasing the level of job readiness in our city,” said Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck.
