VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – As our local medical experts tell us time and time again, drinking plenty of fluids is the key to staying cool during a heat advisory. The advice is crucial as we start August with heat indices expected to get higher than 100 degrees, with the National Weather Service forecasting 110 degrees for the heat index on Friday.
Globally, this past July is expected to be the hottest on record. But thankfully, Hampton Roads has fared well compared to the rest of the world. We had a number of cooler days, keeping our July out of the regional top ten.
Thursday morning, vacationers got outside early, before the temps shot up.
“Stay cool, stay under the shade for sure, I think it’s very easy to get dehydrated,” Linda Dilorenzo said.
Andy Yue and his family came to Norfolk for a chess tournament. They are also taking some time to enjoy Oceanfront after the competition.
“We took a stroll all along the beach today, we saw the sunrise and all that,” Yue said.
For Yue, staying cool on a hot day is easy.
“Stay indoors and turn on the AC, I guess,” he said.
Locals recommend getting outdoor activities done in the morning. Still, some still long for the Autumn months.
“Right now, I’m looking forward to that crisp, cool October air, coming in,” Dallas O’Neal said.
If you must spend time outside during the extreme heat, hydration is your best defense according to local doctors.
“Water is the best performance enhancing substance out there for for for both performance and for hydration and for preventing heat illness and for treating it,” explained Dr. Joel Brenner with CHKD.
