NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — There’s a man on a mission to get 100 kidneys for 100 kids who need them. He’s driving across the country this summer and stopped at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters on Friday to meet a young child on the wait list.

With all of this energy, it’s hard to believe Legand Crouch is sick, but he is.

“He was born with chronic kidney disease,” said his grandfather, Whalan McDew.

That’s why Brian Martindale rolled into town on his Driving for Life Mission. “This year I’m in 22 cities. We’re covering 10,000 miles to recruit living kidney donors for children,” Martindale said.

Driving for Life is in its third summer, but Martindale’s mission really began in 2013 when he donated one of his own kidneys to a young lady whose story he had seen in his local newspaper.

“We tested a couple weeks after I read the story, and we matched as if we were siblings,” Martindale said.

That little girl is now grown up and serves on the board of directors of Kidney’s for Kids, which brings us back to Legand.

The five year old is looking for a kidney so he can stop doing dialysis every night

“When he first started, it was a lot of, anxiety for him, a little bit of pain. And then, just him not knowing what was really going on,” McDew said.

Nearly 2,000 kids in the U.S. need immediate kidney transplants.

“We have, I believe, 10 patients on the wait list,” CHKD Dialysis Nurse Practitioner, Jennifer Kayton said.

CHKD celebrated its 100th kidney transplant earlier this year and encourages living donors whenever possible to get children like Legand off of dialysis as soon as possible.

“It puts a patient at high risk for a major disruption in normal childhood development. And honestly, the best solution to that is a kidney transplant,” Kayton said.

Adults can donate kidneys to children and donors will not get any medical bills. The recipients insurance covers the cost. If you’re interested in becoming a donor, click here to start the screening process.

“So, far between last year and this year, we’ve helped match 11 different kids to 11 different donors. My goal is 100 kidneys for 100 kids,” Martindale said.

He’s hoping Legand will be one of them.
